We stayed in The Grand for 2 nights (9th May - 11th May 2018). The hotel is lovely. My Grandmas, Mum and Sisters room all had balloons, cards and chocolate awaiting them upon arrival to the rooms. Lovely touch. The hotel rooms are spacious and welcoming. Could do with an new hairdryer and ironing board as they were a little old. Small gripe over monies owed at the end of our stay even though we paid upon arrival. This was swiftly sorted. Look forward to staying again. Collapse

Decided on a Sunday night stay at the Grand Hotel and booked a one nighter with breakfast and very glad we did. The approach to the hotel was off a busy road and we were greeted by Wynn, an exceedingly affable chap in his bowler hat with a smile on his face and the ever so pleasant Yorkshire welcome with politeness and humourous banter all rolled into one. He explained the options regarding car parking, valet parking at £30, vouchers for you to self park at a nearby NCP for about £20 or another car park about 15 minutes walk away for about a tenner...we chose valet parking as we were here for a treat! He unloaded our bags, organised the valet parking of our car and as we had arrived early morning to make the most of the day we weren't able to check in until later so our bags were tagged and put into secure storage until we checked in. After a wander round York , lunch at Betty's famous tearoom and a visit to a local pub we returned to the hotel to check in late afternoon, quick and efficient reception staff pointed us in the right direction and we found our bags had made it to our rooms before us from storage.. We were given room 147 in the new wing and found this to be a beautifully appointed, spacious room with understated elegance, the usual tray of kettle, biscuits, and sachets of beverages ran through to quality tea (Yorkshire tea of course), coffees and hot chocolate - with the added bonus of a proper teapot to brew your cuppa in! The bathroom was brightly lit, modern, very spacious and also of very high standard fittings wise, the tiling on the floor non-slip and heated, such a nice feature. The only criticism i could make is the horrible glass shower screen that is nigh on useless, it allowed water to seep underneath it and when retracted left a sharp edge exposed on the lower 'seal strip', Complimentary Moulton and Brown toiletries were a pleasant touch, little bottles replenished at the evening turn down service when we were also left with locally sourced shortbread biscuits on the bed and the bathroom cleaned after we'd got bathed for our evening in York. It's always a nice feature being able to listen to the radio / tv in the bathroom too. We had drinks in the bar before we walked back into York and again when we returned quite late, both times we were served quickly with just enough interest in our day without being familiar - someone has done a brilliant job of training their staff! Overnight the hotel was quiet, the bed comfortable and the air conditioning perfect, I suppose it being so new it worked ever so quietly only the gentle waft of air on my face letting me know it was working. One issue for me was the overly soft pillows, one was too soft, two too high....compromise was to roll one up! Breakfast the next morning was buffet style, everything from juices, continental style with cold meats, salmon and crayfish, with cereals and assorted fresh fruits all the way to a full cooked Yorkshire breakfast....there were upscale options available for an extra charge but the inclusive offerings were more than sufficient in choice and quality - everything was excellent, no-one could reasonably complain about any aspect of the breakfast on offer, and once again the serving staff attentive without being intrusive. Check -out was quick, the bill not hugely surprising considering the drinks bill, valet parking etc., but we were more than happy with the overall costs. Our car was ready and waiting for us outside when we were ready to leave and no more than 10 yards from the doorway - an excellent end to a wonderful stay. Every member of staff from porters/concierge, reception, housekeeping, waiting and bar we encountered during our stay smiled and acknowledged us, were attentive to our every need and were a credit to the hotel. Would we go back - yes, hopefully very soon, for a longer period so we can make use of the spa and pool and yes we're looking forward to it! Collapse

There were no characters ie no Mad Hatter and not anyone else from the book. Consequently no photo opportunities. Afternoon tea was incredibly expensive ie twice the price of Betty’s It was a buffet and overcrowded. The table was very pretty but access was difficult as everyone went to choose food at the same time. We were charged extra for lemonade for a child. Games were set out outside the room and staff carried food and drinks through children playing. Staff looked unhappy that some under fives were running about there. Not a particularly great experience This hotel could learn a lot from “afternoon tea with Peter Rabbit in Bowness...Peter Rabbit and Beatrix Potter were there !! Consequently plenty of photo opportunities Our food was set out on our table so no bun fight. Beatrix Potter read one of her stories and signed complementary books for all the children She was also drawing and painting. Altogether a fantastic experience Shame about this. Collapse

Treated to an overnight stay in this perfectly placed, stylish and beautifully renovated establishment. With wide hallways, imposing chandeliers and impressive staircase this hotel and it’s staff couldn’t have been more friendly and welcoming. Greeted by Wayne as we arrived by car, he quickly organised valet parking, delivery of luggage to our executive room (which was ready, even though it was only midday) with a lovely smile and friendly chat. The room(s) were stylish and modern yet comfortable and homely with quality fabrics. Breakfast was delicious with a huge range of cereals, fruit, pastries, cold meats and cheese and the full English. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to use the pool and spa facilities which means that we will HAVE to return of course just to try them out! A fabulous hotel with fabulous staff. Collapse
