Go back in time to Chester and discover 2,000 years of history, from its Roman beginnings and medieval heyday to Victorian boom.
It’s all just two hours from London on one of our high-speed trains – and with your travel, accommodation and attractions all packaged up in a perfect city break, it’s easy to see why Chester is one of our favourites.
Where should you stay? We have that sorted, whether you’d prefer a country house retreat, four-star spa pampering or city centre convenience. The surroundings may be historic, but these hotels are all about modern day comforts.
How better to get your first glimpse of the city than by taking an open top bus tour, hopping off to see the remains of Britain’s largest Roman amphitheatre or to step inside the splendid Gothic cathedral?
Chester Zoo is well worth a visit, especially with the kids. With 20,000 exotic or endangered creatures sharing its 125-acre plot, there’s no wonder it’s rated as one of the world’s best.
Talking of animals, we bet you’ll love a trip to the Roodee – the country’s oldest racetrack that held its first race when Henry VIII was on the throne.
Not your kind of sport? Retail therapy comes in many forms in Chester, but you mustn’t miss the world’s only Shopping Rows. Dating from the 1200s, these half-timbered, double-decker buildings house a host of specialist stores and restaurants.
Need a breather? Then sit back and enjoy a relaxing cruise along the tranquil River Dee. And if that gets you in the mood for dinner, Chester can deliver, with restaurants serving anything from Michelin-star fare to teppanyaki cooked before your eyes. You didn’t get that in Ancient Rome!
